When Francine Larocque retired early, she knew she needed to start challenging
herself. A former accounting clerk who felt stuck doing accounts payable for
years, she yearned for a deeper, richer understanding of accounting principles.
But Francine didn’t have a high school diploma, plus she was a shy person and
a nervous driver, so she didn’t know how she could go back to school.
A local learning centre suggested Francine try e-learning from home. She got a
computer and the centre set her up with a mentor who supports her in achieving
her learning goals. Currently enrolled in a number of on-line classes, Francine is steadily
working towards getting her grade 12 equivalency. Then she plans to study accounting.
“I have always wanted to better myself,” says Francine. “E-learning has given me
the flexibility to take courses at my own pace and at home where I am comfortable.
Soon I will be able to manage my own budget and do my own taxes – to be more
self-sufficient. I’m making my life-long dream come true and I’m proud of myself.”

Alex Martin often felt helpless when his 12-year-old son, Thomas, needed support with his school work. A single parent who had dropped out of high school, Alex was finding it increasingly difficult to support his son’s learning needs. Thomas’ grades were slipping and Alex was worried about his son’s future.
“I wanted to help my son do something with his life,” said Alex. “But at twelve, he was more advanced than I was. It reminded me of the movie ‘I am Sam.’ The girl quits learning because she doesn’t want to be smarter than her father. I didn’t want Thomas to think that way.”
Thanks to e-learning, Alex completed his grade 12 equivalency in just two years. Through a series of learning activities on his home computer and the support of a mentor, Alex gained a lot of confidence. Today he volunteers at Thomas’ school. His son is thriving and their relationship has improved dramatically. E-learning made a powerful impact on their lives.
