Google Tricks

Monday, November 21st, 2011 by maria

I am, I must confess a Goolgle girl, well…maybe not exactly a girl…more of a Google Granny really… it’s still my favourite search engine.

I just want to share some neat tools that I have used to to make the most of the power of Google to help me find what I want… First up is the Features Page on  Google Inside Search - it’s basically everything you ever wanted to know about searching with Google – and is very helpful.

Next is a fantastic resource Good to Know with up to the minute information about online safety, your data on the web, your data on Google and how to manage your data.

Finally, I do use Google Chrome and have just discovered this wonderful tool  -  Evernote Clearly – a Chrome  extension that allows me to read websites and blogs without any distractions – it slides over the page to remove ads, navigation and links to other content – making for relaxing reading.

Here’s just one more – I love this – Google a Day is a search game – there’s a new question every day – only one right answer but many many ways to find it.

Enjoy!

Spam Busting Tips

Spam ( is one of those aggravating things (hmm a bit like mosquitoes ?) that we have all learned to live with and work around.   However, I do think that a little Spam goes a long long way…  here are a couple of useful resources to help us all reduce Spam and protect our selves – these tips could be very helpful for your office computer and your personal computer and could also  form the basis for a basic digital literacy lesson for students.

The first is from the Government of Canada site on the new Anti-Spam Legislation –   Spam – How to Recognise It and Protect Yourself – is a set of straightforward tips –  clearly written and very practical .

The second is  from Mashable - How to reduce the  Spam in  your Inbox, Mailbox and Voicemail…   it’s a short set of slides and you can also view it as one page.

Searching the Internet – a Refresher

Thursday, September 15th, 2011 by maria

Last week I took a look at some digital housekeeping – and it’s really paid off for me – I feel very tidy and organized – at least in my ‘digital’ life.  This time I thought I would revisit some of my internet searching skills – I think I’ve gotten just a teeny bit lazy – after all “google” has been used a a verb since 2006!!

So I set out to refresh my skills – here’s some of what I found… How to Search Like a Pro is a brief and breezy introduction to how to narrow your search to make it more effective.  Google itself offers very clear tips on basic and more advanced search… very helpful to make the most of your ‘googling’ time.  Four NETS for Better Searching is a terrific guide with super-clear examples of how to sharpen your search skills.

Google and Beyond: Searching the Web More Effectively is an easy to use guide to Google alternatives and Google features with some very good ideas and suggestions.  Finally a just updated list of Internet Tutorials is a great way to find easy to follow tutorials on searching, finding good content, keeping up to date with the web and much more.

Happy Searching!!
