Agnes is a science professor and program co-ordinator in academic upgrading at Sheridan College, and a chemistry instructor with ACE Distance. She has been a contributor within adult education for 25 years. Throughout her career, Agnes has worked in English as a second language, literacy and post-secondary fields. For the past eight years, she has been teaching online and blended courses, in addition to those delivered face-to-face.
AlphaPlus benefits from Agnes’s experience delivering literacy in Ontario, liaising with provincial government and collaborating with community literacy and employment organizations.
Agnes brings expertise with design and delivery of online learning and implementing technology in the classroom. As a lifelong learner, she is interested in learning new technologies and tools in education and improving the online learning experience for students.
Karen is the Knowledge Exchange Manager with Safeguards Training for Children and Adult Services in Richmond Hill. A passionate advocate for technology literacy, Karen has enjoyed active involvement in many AlphaPlus programs over the years. She holds an Honour’s degree in Psychology from York University, and a Teacher/Trainer of Adults certificate from Centennial College. In a previous role, she spent eight years with the York Region District School Board as a Literacy and Basic Skills Instructor before becoming involved in the mental health sector. Karen is excited to bring the practitioner perspective to the Board of Directors.
Guillaume is an experienced IT professional who has contributed to many organizations, including the Ontario Ministry of Government and Consumer Services, Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, TD Bank and MCI/WorldCom. He holds an MBA from the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management and a global executive MBA from the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland.
With over 20 years of experience, Guillaume specializes in IT operations management, data centre management and IT infrastructure. In addition, he has managed large IT infrastructures as an IT director for various organizations and is currently an independent IT consultant for the Province of Ontario.
Lily Chong brings more than ten years of experience in institutional research and program review and higher education to the board of directors. She holds a Master’s degree in Adult Education, a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management and teaches ESL online and in traditional classroom settings. Throughout her career, Lily has mentored newcomers navigating workplace cultures; worked in healthcare, management consulting and insurance, and been involved in student retention and satisfaction research studies. Her drive to educate international students led Lily to teach English as a Second Language, where she strives to implement effective classroom technologies to improve academic outcomes.
Peter is a licensed professional engineer who holds a degree in electrical engineering from Carleton University. In addition to working in the technical side of business at Telus Communications, Peter is a passionate individual, driven entrepreneur and the owner of a small green-technology consulting firm. An experienced teacher, his previous role includes teaching computer networking and digital electronics as a part-time instructor at Centennial College. Peter lends his well-rounded expertise and experience with technology as well as his entrepreneurial, teaching and communication skills to the AlphaPlus Board.
Dr. Nicola Hepburn
Nicola Hepburn is a Senior Policy Advisor in the Programs Policy and Analytics Branch at the Ontario Ministry of Finance. In her previous work, Nicola held policy and research positions at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology, Scotiabank, the Ontario Ministry of Economic Development and Innovation, the Council of Ontario Universities, and the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations. Nicola holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and sociology, a master’s degree in public policy and administration from McMaster University, and a doctor of philosophy in political science from the University of Toronto. She brings extensive expertise in communications, government affairs and knowledge transfer to the Board.
Soraya Sarif is the co-founder of Synerjunction, an organization specializing in brain-based programs for diversity and inclusion, emotional intelligence and performance. A speaker, facilitator and adviser, Soraya is a specialist in knowledge transfer, skill cultivation and development, and productive paradigm shifts at the individual, team and organizational levels. Her 17 years of corporate experience led to her current role facilitating programs globally. Soraya holds a master’s degree in international business from Middlesex University, and a robust, hybrid background in human resources and corporate communications. She has worked extensively in financial services, renewable energy, education and health-care industries as a manager and consultant. Her strong understanding of diverse organizations from a strategic lens and her experience as a project manager position Soraya to bring expertise on team development and organizational transformation projects to the Board.
Yasir Mirza is a member of Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada with over 15 years of experience in public practice and both public and private industries. Presently, he is the Director, Global Accounting Policy, Group Finance for Manulife. Throughout his career, Yasir has managed financial functions including accounting policy, auditing, controls, and governance. He is also a member of professional accounting and auditing bodies in the United States, and the United Kingdom. In addition, Yasir has worked in statutory and management reporting, and contributed to many strategic initiatives. As a board member, Yasir will contribute his expertise in financial management, policy interpretation, and regulations to support the AlphaPlus mission.
